Nothing gives me more pleasure than to receive photographs of children reading my books. This young lady loves "All About Rainbows" and she is only three years old. Thank you!

 Hello,

I'm here with a few of my imaginary       friends. They seem to be multiplying rapidly this year. Welcome to our world. Yes, it's your world too. Welcome You!

Eric Carle's portrait inspired mine with Cleo.

NEW PICTURE BOOKS IN 2025

In the picture book "Dancing with the Rain" a young girl's imagination is ignited by her grandparent's comments about the rain. "Poppy says, "It's raining cats and dogs". Grandma says, "One day in your life it may rain frogs". The young girl (Aubree) spins into a mindful visual dance of all the imaginative possibilities of what it could rain. These numerous possibilities written in rhyme will take you along with her. The colorful illustrations and poetic verse are presented mostly in double page spreads and are most entertaining. Author / writer Robert Carr once again uses his imagination and artistic skill to dazzle you. When you read this book, you will be left with the joy of experiencing a creative excursion into the mind of a child. A great book for K-Grade 5 and elementary teachers.

The picture book “Pencil Talk” mimics the format of a play. The main character (a pencil) transforms into animals and objects along the way. Whether a necktie or a firefly, a dancing fruit or a magical flute, a pail or a snail, a dancer in a ballet or a beautiful bouquet, the transformations are utmost entertaining and memorable. Imagination is extensive presiding through this poetic and colorful work. The ingenious illustrations most definitely will inspire young minds while giving tribute to an eternal tool, the pencil. The pencil being at the root of all designs and visual concepts. L.C.

Book Descriptions

I Lost My Tooth 111jpeg.jpg
I Lost My Tooth 111jpeg11.jpg
All about rainbows jpeg....jpg
CCI_000191_edited.jpg

This picture book is one with profound meaning. The main character “Walrus” makes a perfect subject as his two long teeth are so notable in defining his character. Multiple characters within the mammalian family cry out proclaiming they too have lost a tooth. The stress of loss is resolved and hope is restored to all other animals when “Walrus” grows a second tooth as most mammals do.

The illustrations are bold, simple, loveable, and memorable. The backgrounds, foregrounds, and inner text are painted with a toothbrush using various techniques.

This book is a great beginner reader book with predictable text. It is cathartic to a child’s emotions around the loss of a tooth.

"Walrus, Will You Hang With Me", is one of those “must-have” picture books. The loveable characters; Sloth and Walrus, improve their friendship through perseverance, imagination, perspective, and patience.  There is a gradual visual transformation from day into night as the story unfolds. Thoughts are portrayed with imaginative illustrations as Walrus tries desperately to be closer with Sloth. Walrus himself transforms into many things as he seeks solutions. This lovely story is about friendship and a healthy example of improving any relationship.

The story ends with a fun song.

A great story for all ages.

A great book for the classroom , counselor, and parents when addressing friendship.

In this book, "All About Rainbows", the character Cleo the cat will take you on an amusing and unique journey of learning about rainbows. You will learn a little history, science, art, music, poetry, and folklore while having a wagon full of fun.

This precious, colorful, non-fiction book provides perspectives, connections, and even activities to extend learning.

"All About Rainbows" is a poignant book for all ages of children throughout elementary school. A great book for the science teacher too.

In this book, Cleo the black cat is mischievous as many cats are. He is always getting entangled in balls of yarn. Cleo's owner (an unnamed character) appears throughout the book. First she appears, cropped by the picture frame, in legs and feet only. She is wearing crocheted yarn slippers. Near the end of the book, more of her body is seen. She is wearing a crocheted sweater. In the last page her head is revealed, and Cleo is in her hair.

This story teaches about color and spatial concepts. It also makes visual the special relationship an owner has with their pet. The colorful illustrations are electronically generated.

Saint Nick-tionary

This book encompasses a visual and creative power to entertain its viewers through using verb commands to manipulate images of Saint Nick. What you didn’t learn about the power of verbs from your Language Arts teacher you will certainly learn in this book from an Art teacher. No matter what age you are, this rare picture book will empower you to be more creative mastering the power of verbs when creating.

Tis the season for you to be creative!

Hush Little Cyclops Don't You Cry

The song, “Hush Little Baby Don’t You Cry” is an old American lullaby. The author is unknown. It is believed the song originated in the southern United States. The lyrics appear in many forms. Some versions are lengthy with many additional verses.

This version, “Hush Little Cyclops Don’t  You Cry” follows a similar theme of getting a child ready to go to bed. However, the life of a baby cyclops certainly gives a colorful and imaginary dimension to this historic folk song.

The star character, Uno, even as a cyclops, is as lovable as his mother’s love. The illustrations are darling and provoke curiosity into the secret world of a cyclops family.

Uno's World

What is the natural habitat of Uno and his cyclops family?

In this picture book you will most definitely find out. Open the cover to discover an ongoing landscape of trees with rainbow-ribbonned bark, flowers that have eyes, rain that can see, and mushrooms that can fly.

Uno’s World will inspire an endless potential of stories in the observer. Created without words, it provides and defines the setting for two cyclops books by the author. They are; "Hush Little Cyclops Don’t You Cry" and "I Can and so Can You". It is a great complimentary book to the others. Uno’s World is the author’s favorite. The imagination is astonishing.

In time...

Can You Find My Mom?

In this picture book the one-eyed characters are from the Land of Uno. The readers (adults and children) bring peace to the baby animals by finding their mothers among other one-eyed characters of a kind. Visual discrimination skills are practiced and mastered while having great fun solving the missing mother dilemma, in this imaginary world and among its inhabitants. Coming at the end of 2025.

                               The Painted Lady

"The Painted lady" is a tribute book to a remarkable lady that had a great influence on me. She was a huge personality in a little pond. She was extraordinary in countless ways. Her name was Maywill Dudley Sloan.

Maywill had many careers in her life. She was a published author and illustrator. In this book, I plan to use some of her illustrations from the 1930s combined with my own. The cover is one of Maywills illustrations doctored for reprinting. The book is a biography from my childhood perspective knowing her.

Writing this will be a big challenge. Can I make a book about a colorfully painted lady that inspires children as Maywill inspired me?

It troubles me, that people pass on and in time there is little or no trace of them. Maywill needs to be commemorated. I know her grandchildren will appreciate it. This may be a way for me to  say thank you.

The Stitching of an Art Teacher

Everyone has stories.  The challenge is telling them and writing them so they will have meaning to others.

    Shall I entertain you?
    Shall I inspire you?
    Shall I teach you?
    Shall I validate you?
    Shall we commiserate?
    Shall we make meaning?
    Shall we heal?
    Shall we aspire?

We all have unique encounters with the people we meet,
the people we live with, our families, and the many environments we exist in. Where we live, where we work, where we learn, and where we play - all compose us into a painting.

Is the painting common? Is it extraordinary?  Is it worth sharing? We shall see. For now, in my own precious time, one by one I enter my stories into the cover, "The Stitching of an Art Teacher".
I do like the cover. LOL
Now lets see about the guts?

Predictable Text

There are many types of picture books for children with various objectives.  Books with predictable text use repetition in one or many ways. The purpose is to allow young readers to achieve reading a book independently. Repetition of words, word placement, and sentences are characteristic of this type of book.  Concepts such as inflection, punctuation, and the mechanics of reading a book from left to right (top to bottom) are predictable and learned.

Can You See the Rainbow?

Today was a remarkable day for me in so many ways.  As an author and illustrator of children’s picture books, I arrived at Rebecca Johnson Elementary School in Springfield, MA to do a reading from the book “All About Rainbows” and a related art activity. In the non-fiction book there is a black cat named Cleo. He is the narrator. Cleo brought the students into some rainbow math, some science, some art, and some history.

In the book, a sampling of non-controversial symbolic meanings of the rainbow from around the globe are illuminated through simple illustrations. For example; the rainbow in Siberia is a guide to the Sun Spirit, In Australia a rainbow serpent is symbolic of life, in Ireland the rainbow is a path to a pot of gold and good luck, in Greece the Goddess Isis appears as a rainbow, in Egypt Nut the Goddess of the sky embraces the rainbow, and in North America the Cherokee people represent their Sun God with clothes that have a rainbow hem. These are just a few global examples of the rainbow over time.

Children and adults marvel over the wonder of the rainbow. It is a global and universal experience. Perhaps an experience as old as the earth itself, well maybe as old as dinosaurs. Hmmm,  they did have eyes. That being said, the rainbow has taken on so many different meanings. During the recent pandemic it was used as a sign of gratitude toward health workers and others. When our pets die, it is said thy are on their way crossing over the Rainbow Bridge. Other meanings attributed to the rainbow are equality, equity, hope, promise, good luck, new beginnings, communication, peace, eternal life, afterlife and love. The rainbow has also been the symbol of the LGBTQIA community and advocates.

The students from grades 3, 4 and 5 at the reading are refugees from Venezuela, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Uganda, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, Somalia, Syria, and Ecuador. They are being guided by some very qualified, loving innovative teachers and paras under the direction of a well-loved principal. Shoulder to shoulder they sit each day. Children. Earth’s children under one sun. Their classroom is a united nation not only of nations but of survivors with open eyes. Grateful survivors and eager for life and learning. Beautiful children.

Can you see the rainbows here? Can you feel the hope? Can you feel the promise? Can you see the potential of their juxtaposition to one another? Can you see their potential as leaders one day? Peace, communication, equity, new beginnings and unity. We cannot touch a rainbow, but we can be touched by the multiple rainbows glowing from Rebecca Johnson Elementary School.

The children were excited to elaborate on using the rainbow to redesign Cleo’s wardrobe, add to his family and his identity, to practice the colors of the rainbow and more. A cat king with crown on roller-blades, a Christmas sweater, a bowtie, socks, boots, soccer ball, traditional shawl, and even rainbow fish buttons. I didn’t even know Cleo could skate and that he liked to eat fish and I invented him. Imagine that.

In conclusion, remember there are rainbows everywhere and you can be a part of making one or many.                                                                                                                                                                                                      November 2023 By Robert Carr

The Holiday Bazaar was a great success. Twenty five guests; friends, friends of friends, colleagues and relatives. A big thank you to sister Debbie (the cashier), Bernie (the charmer), Del (the greater and manager of sweets and things).

I enjoyed my visit to Bowles Elementary School in Springfield, MA. The preschoolers were very excited about "Uno" the baby cyclops. They created their own baby cyclops' .Above are just 4 examples. What do you think of them? I say they sure look like Uno's cousins.

Every adult I encountered was so supportive and generous in spirit, secretaries, paraprofessionals, teachers, the custodian and  the principal. A special Thank you to Ms. Mizek for coordinating the visit and to Principal Mr. McCann who provided each student with a copy of the book "Hush Little Cyclops Don't you Cry".

COUSINS?

“I've been working on poems for various characters in this book today. It’s going well, but in order to write them, I must become the characters. Now I am confused about who I am.  All said, I really am all of the characters. And that is frighteningly delicious!”
